The project will:
- raise consciousness of the history of Queen Mary and its constituent colleges among students, staff and the wider community;
- contribute to QM's aim of widening access to higher education by encouraging applications from different communities both locally and nationally;
- also contribute to fundraising initiatives, particularly in relation to scholarships, through raising the College's profile while also showing the impact of higher education for those who enter first from their communities.
The project will include the events listed below, which collectively aim to:
‘explore the challenges, dilemmas and opportunities for women from different generations and different communities entering higher education for the first time and to draw parallels between different groups of women for whom the entry into education was unexpected and in some sense disruptive of wider assumptions about the social and cultural role of women'.
Activities are planned to take place in 2007, the 125th anniversary of the founding of Westfield College and the 120th anniversary of the founding of the institution that was to become Queen Mary College.
To take place in the Octagon in the autumn of 2007. It will exhibit material from our archives related to the history of Queen Mary, Westfield and the Medical and Dental colleges. It will also include material generated by interviews with alumni, as well as artifacts lent by alumni. It will be designed to allow for a smaller portable version of the exhibition that can be used for a variety of subsequent events. A catalogue of the exhibition will also be produced.
Further details of the exhibition can be found by clicking on the 'Exhibition and Events' link above.
The Women@QM Project and exhibition was officially launched on Thursday 4th October 2007 with a round-table event with alumni from the past six or seven decades. The event was chaired by Professor Lisa Jardine CBE.
In addition, those Schools and Departments organizing public lectures for the academic year 2007/08 have been asked to engage with the central themes of this project when deciding on a choice of speaker or of topic.
Further details of the round-table event and other public lectures can be found by clicking on the 'Exhibition and Events' link above.
Academic contributions to our outreach activities in 2007/08 will focus particularly on the role of women in higher education, and will give particular prominence to the role of women in science and engineering.
Further details of outreach activities can be found by clicking on the 'Outreach and Alumni' link above.
Women@QM Community Involvement
